Navyug's SOTY defies social taboos

Lucknow: In her locality, girls who don't stay indoors are looked down up on. But, the daughter of a carpenter, 20-year-old Nandini Verma, defied all and emerged student of the year in her college. An NCC cadet, Nandini was awarded a trophy for her outstanding performance in academics as well as co-curricular activities at the third convocation of Navyug Maha Vidyalaya, an associated college of Lucknow University, held on Sunday.
Hailing from Karesata locality in Aishbagh, BA student Nandini said, "It's the best gift I could give to my parents who have always supported me. They compromised on everything, never bought new clothes for themselves, but gave me everything they could.'' She is now preparing for selection in the Indian Police Services. Nandini's father Suraj Pal Verma has studied till class X, while her mother Tejwati is a class VIII drop-out.
Besides sports, Nandini has excelled in activities like anchoring, dancing, and singing in her college. She has led her college in campaigns such as 'Beti padhao, beti bachao' and 'Right to Vote' for which she spread awareness among people with nukkad nataks (street plays). "We went to Hazratganj and raised awareness among people, particularly youth on the importance of voting. I have also participated in several health related campaigns,'' said Nandini.
"Every time I stepped out of the house, people passed comments on me and my parents saying, 'Ladki ko itna kyun padhana...zyada padha likha kar koi fayda nahi (What's the use of educating a girl?). But today, the same people give my example to their daughters. The real women empowerment will be when I become an IPS officer,'' said Nandini.
