CHENNAI: Nine party members of the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) were arrested by Egmore police station on Saturday night for allegedly ransacking the office of party general secretary Thamimum Ansari in Pudupettai.
Police said that it was the fallout of a party feud between Ansari and party MLAs M. H. Jawahirullah and Aslam Basha. The duo had been dismissed from the party at a meeting earlier on the same day.
“The cadre who has been arrested backed Jawahirullah. They broke furniture, computer hard discs, etc and stole important case files. Ansari has given a complaint saying 5 lakh was also stolen. We have asked them to submit proof,” police said.
Police said that CCTV cameras at the office captured the accused ransacking the office. “This helped us nab them,” police said.
The nine arrested have been identified as Mk Meeran, Zakir, M Abdul, Ali Faroque, Allauddin, Akbar Ali, Sheikh Muhammed, Batcha Khan, M Rehmatullah. They have been remanded to judicial custody at Puzhal prison.
