Thiruvananthapuram: City police have begun crackdown on all illegal hotels and homestays functioning in Kovalam.
The action has been initiated in the wake of recent assaults on foreigners. DCP Sanjay Kumar Gurudin has issued a series of directives to the sub-inspector and circle inspector of Kovalam police station.
Kovalam police had on Thursday arrested a man in connection with rape attempt on a German woman tourist.
A Swedish woman aged 64 has also come up with a similar complaint against the man.
The cops have been directed to verify all hotels and homestays functioning illegally and check the security arrangements within the hotels.
Besides, action will be taken against hotels which have been found to serve liquor and are involved in harrassment of foreign tourists.
The DCP has also instructed the cops to intensify patrol and vigil against antisocial elements.
Random and surprise checking of inmates of the hotels will also be held in the wake of complaints of rape. Nizar, 28, a resident of Kasaragod was arrested for barging into the room of a 37-year-old German tourist and trying to rape her.
