Yeh dosti: Having spent almost 30 years in India, Bhaichand Patel, a Fijian national, has made a lot of friends here, one of them being Fiji’s high commissioner Yogesh Karan. Bhaichand recently organized a farewell party at his residence for the diplomat, who will soon be joining the Fiji PM’s office.
He’s a Jolly good fellow: Before dinner, Bhaichand raised a toast for Yogesh, and he said, “Yogesh has done amazing things for Fiji in this country.
To see Yogesh and Anjani (his wife) go is very sad for me, but I am delighted that you are going to a higher office. Best of luck.” Talking about his assignment to India, his first diplomatic assignment, Yogesh said, “Once, one of the ambassadors here told me that when you are posted to India you cry, but when you are about to leave, you cry ten times. At the time, I didn’t really understand what he was trying to say, but now I do.”
Learnt a lot here: Talking about her Delhi experience, the high commissioner’s wife, Anjani, said, “I am in love with the place, and it’s sad that we have to leave. I’ve been to most flea markets in Delhi and now I can proudly say that I know how to bargain. Whenever the vendors start doubting my nationality because of my accent, I tell them I’m an Indian, but lived in Australia for a few years, and that’s why my accent is like this, warning them that I’ll know if they try to take me for a ride.”
