Carberry RCMP got quite the surprise after attending the scene of a single-vehicle collision that happened 2 km east of Carberry on Highway 1, in the RM of North Cypress-Langford.

The collision happened around 7:00 a.m., Wednesday.

RCMP said that when they arrived to the scene, they found a woman, the driver of the vehicle, to be in possession of a minor quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The vehicle was towed back to the detachment where it was searched for further drug evidence. Police said that there was not enough evidence to support a charge for drug possession.

The woman did not have a valid driver’s licence and was going to be released with a traffic ticket upon arrival of her ride.

Police allowed the woman to charge her phone while she waited to be picked up. She was very cooperative with officers and was accompanied by an RCMP officer near the vehicle.

RCMP said that it was through additional checks on paperwork located in the car, that they discovered the driver had given them a false identity.

Police said when the woman realized this, she put the vehicle in motion and attempted to flee.

In all the commotion, an officer was dragged by the vehicle as he tried to disengage the ignition. After driving into several snowbanks, the vehicle came to a complete stop.

Police said a second officer came to help, and the woman proceeded to assault both officers. Eventually they were able to subdue her.

Both the officers and the woman received minor injuries. She was taken into custody and transported to Brandon Correctional Institute.

Caley Elizabeth Steele, 27, of Lac du Bonnet, has been charged with a string of offences including assault on a police officer, assault with a weapon, escaping custody and identity fraud.

Steele had a court appearance Thursday morning and has been remanded to Brandon Correctional Institute pending a further court appearance.
