Real estate agent killed over property row

Kandivali man's decomposing body was found dumped in the jungles in Roha on Thursday.

Charkop police on Thursday arrested four persons after a Kandivali real estate agent was found murdered in a secluded area of Roha in Raigad district.

According to the cops, the deceased, identified as Sanjay Chauhan alias Baba, had gone missing three days back. He had told his family he was going out to meet some friends and would be back soon. But when he did not turn up for a day, his family registered a missing complaint with the Charkop police.

Meanwhile in Roha, villagers informed the police about a decomposed body lying in the woods. When cops searched the body, they found an ID card and immediately informed Mumbai police.

The body had no injury marks, making it difficult to ascertain the cause of death. It was only after post-mortem that cops came to know he had died of strangulation, following which Raigad police registered a murder case.

When Charkop police came to know of the killing, they probed the matter and arrested a suspect, Praveen Thakkar, who works as manager for a prominent city builder. Thakkar has confessed to killing Chauhan over a property handover dispute.

Cops said Thakkar had sold a few flats to some clients brought to him by Chauhan, but refused to give them keys to the properties despite taking the money. Chauhan was threatening him that he’d go to the police. Three days back, the accused called Chauhan to Wadala on the pretext of settling the dispute. They had alcohol together after which Thakkar and three of his friends took Chauhan in a car, strangulated him and dumped his body in the jungles of Roha.

API Patil of Raigad police confirmed the incident, saying, “A case has been registered and investigations are on.”
