'Ancient' bricks unearthed in Bhavka

Vadodara: Bhavka near Dahod that has the distinction of having a Shiva temple and also called the 'Khajuraho of Gujarat' because of erotic sculptures on its exterior, has unravelled more remains of possible archaeological importance. Digging at a pond near the temple led workers to bricks of ancient age.
The Shiv Panchayatan temple at Bhavka is a monument protected by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).The site was originally a complex of five temples, but only one survives today. A shallow pond is located near the site and it was decided to deepen it under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).
During the digging for the pond, flat and large bricks surfaced. Sources said that bricks of the dimensions that were unearthed are not in use these days. Those working on the site believe that these are ancient as they were found a couple of feet under the earth during digging.
In wake of the find, the Dahod district panchayat officials have asked workers to ensure that the spots were the bricks were found are not disturbed. "We have asked officials to contact archaeologists so that they can come and have a closer look at the remains.
The work will be put on hold till then.
The village already has an ASI protected monument and there are chances that these might have some connection," said Dahod district development officer Satish Patel.
While ASI officials are yet to hear from the Dahod district administration, they said that they would send an expert as soon as possible to the site. An official said that the remains could possibly be that of a 'ghat' on the pond or those of the foundation of a structure that did not exist on the surface any more.
