Show-cause notice to ZP chief for violating model code of conduct

Zilla Panchayat president Pushpa Amarnath has been served with a show- cause notice for violating the election code of conduct by using the government guesthouse in Hunsur to address a press conference.The show cause notice, dated January 20, was issued by the Tahsildar. The Hunsur Election Officer has pointed out that the election code of conduct had come into force from January 18 after the announcement of calendar of events for the elections to Zilla and Taluk Panchayat in the State.

“When the election code of conduct is in force, use of government vehicles, government guest houses and other government facilities for election campaign is prohibited,” the notice has stated.

Referring to newspaper reports, the notice said Ms. Amarnath had convened a press conference at the Hunsur government guest house and spoke about her achievements.

The notice asked why action should not be taken against her under provisions of the Representation of People’s Act, 1951 and Section 171 of the Indian Penal Code for violating the election code of conduct. The notice has asked Ms. Amarnath to reply within 24 hours. “If no reply is received within 24 hours, it will be presumed that there is no reply and action will be taken to book a case,” the notice added.
