Art is a beautiful way to express one’s individuality and this fact gets validated every time two different artists come together to showcase their work in an exhibition. The recent exhibition at Nomad Art Gallery (NAG) ‘In the moment’ which opened on Wednesday is a demonstration of bringing two experienced artists together under one roof. It features the works of Ayesha Siddiqui and Farah Khan who have showcased abstract work primarily enamel on canvas in this show.
The exhibition is a beautiful balance of abstract designs in bright and vibrant colours and those in rather dull shades of greys and black with highlights of gold and silver. Both the artists bring their own experiences, perceptions and inspirations to the canvas in meaningful ways.
Speaking to The Express Tribune, NAG Director Nageen Hyat said Siddiqui and Khan are two creative and thought provoking artists who have a distinct personal style. “They have set a contemporary trend of freely expressing their thoughts — provocative, mysterious and skilfully created on their respective canvas,” she said.
Hyat further said the exhibition showcases works that derive from an exploration of self and reflection of the concept of meaningful existence. “The hidden underlying meanings convey a symbolic message of energy to invite a connection with the viewer,” she added.
Siddiqui, who has the honour of being the youngest artist in the country with a studio practice doctoral degree in fine arts has represented Pakistan at the 13th, 14th and 16th Asian Art Biennale. She said she uses geometric vocabulary and gestural treatment of paintings to explore ideas of concealment, camouflage and illegibility.
Her work, primarily abstract and enamel on canvas, stands out and speaks volumes about her vast experience. She has participated in numerous group shows in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Jordan, China, New Zealand and the UK and her paintings are included in several prominent public, corporate and private collections in many countries. Siddiqui is currently preparing for her 17th solo show of paintings and is working on her book ‘Unintelligible Surfaces’.
Khan said her current body of work highlights inward journey towards the ultimate goal of enlightening oneself. “This expedition has manifold nuances that facilitate the seeker in unfolding the true dimension of being which instigates a new chapter of meaningful existence. The luminosity within illumination enables to reach the eventual aspiration,” she said.
The exhibition is ongoing till February 10.
