Tusshar Kapoor: I think Gujaratis really love me
Unofficially, they are the kings of adult comedy in Bollywood. Aftab Shivdasani and Tusshar were at their naughtiest best when they touched down upon Ahmedabad. And their camaraderie was palpable when the duo visited the city to promote their newest screen offering, 'Kya Kool Hain Hum 3.' As Ahmedabad Times caught up with Tusshar Kapoor and Aftab Shivdasani, the two actors open up about their Gujarat connect and more in a candid chat.
Excerpts:
Tusshar Kapoor
You have made several previous visits to Gujarat over the last few years. You must have found a connect with the state by now.
I have been to Gujarat a number of times and most of the times, it has been Ahmedabad. I went to Vadodara once. But every time I have come here, it's been a nice experience. And call it coincidence or whatever, all my films have done great BO business here. I guess Gujaratis really like me. They sure seem to have a funny bone and enjoy comedies a lot, which has been my forte for a while. So we have a two way love relationship.
You visit various cities in India. So what is that one thing that strikes you the most about Gujarat?
I think Gujaratis are very pure at heart and unpretentious people. So when you come here, you know the reaction you are getting from your fans is genuine.
You said you would want to be involved in regional cinema. Have you ever thought of Gujarati cinema?
I would love to do a Gujarati film. But it has to be a very attractive offer. I have never done a regional film before, so it would be like getting out of my comfort zone, learning a new language, working with very new people. So unless there is something which is a great part, I think it would not be advisable. But regional films are surely getting bigger, so it would be great if I get a good offer.

You really seem to have a liking for comedy. You think it comes naturally to you?
I have never really planned my career. I mostly did what was offered to me and comedies came far and wide. But I would like to branch out to do something different as well. Playing a grey character would be nice.
It's difficult to shoot adult-comedy, says Aftab Shivdasani
Aftab Shivdasani
You seem to share a strong bond with Gujarat too.
Yes. Last year we shot at the Laxmi Vilas Palace in Vadodara for 'Grand Masti.' Of course, Gujarat is extra special for me. I have shot twice in the royal palaces of Gujarat, otherwise I have mostly come for promotional events, dandiya and other professional commitments. So, I have never really got a chance to explore the state. I would like to see Gujarat in a different way now. I want to come back on a more relaxed holiday so that I can explore more of this lovely state. And since I love eating, I think there is no better place than Gujarat for a foodie.
You've been in Bollywood for some time now. Do you think the audience are ready for adult comedies?
I think they very much, otherwise how would a 'Grand Masti' cross 110 crore? Films portray what the audience wants to see. And the fact that there are a number of adult comedies being made, shows that the audience doesn't mind them. There is a reaction to anything you do and that's how it is with adult comedies also. But with time it is going to change. It will become 'normal' in due course of time.
You also seem to enjoy such films a lot since you have been a part of a number of them.
It's not that I have a particular liking for any particular kind of films or genre. I just like to take my work seriously and enjoy doing what I do.
Have you ever thought of investing in terms of acting, producing or directing a regional film since you have spent a lot of time here?
I have never really given a serious thought. I know a lot of Bollywood actors are producing and even acting in regional cinema, especially Marathi films, but I haven't thought about it yet.
