Curia blocks referendum on Olympics and Liget Project
The Hungarian Supreme Court, Curia, has decided to block the referendum on two initiatives, one to halt Budapest’s 2024 Olympics bid and the other to put a stop to the Liget Budapest Project, Hungarian online daily origo.hu reported today.
The Curia investigated the two referendum question, which were initially approved by Budapest’s voting committee, after an unnamed person made an appeal to block the two referendums.
The Curia explained its decision regarding the Olympic Games by saying that the local government of Budapest had already decided to bid on the Olympic games, and the deadline for the first phase of the application is February 17, while the referendum was expected to take place at a later date, origo.hu reported.
The Liget Project cannot be voted on in a referendum, the Curia reportedly explained, as it is being regulated by a law that came into effect on December 24, 2013, and a referendum cannot block such legislation.
The two initiatives, collectively referred to as “Hajrá Budapest!” (Letʼs Go Budapest!) were approved by Budapest’s voting committee on December 15, after which there was a 15-day period in which to appeal the decision.
