Fox ditched Greg Norman from its U.S. Open coverage after just one year

In slightly surprising news, Fox Sports announced on Monday that it had parted ways with Greg Norman just one year after signing him as a commentator for the network’s U.S. Open coverage. The story broke on Twitter on Sunday night, and was confirmed by Golf Digest and Golf World shortly before Fox’s official statement:

“After careful consideration, we have decided to make this change to our USGA Championships coverage,” said [Fox Sports Executive Producer] John Entz. “We want to thank Greg for his contributions last year, and wish him success in all his current and future endeavors.”

“I put a lot into my role this past year and really enjoyed the time I spent with the commentary team,” said Norman. “I have a long history with FOX and wish them well on their journey showcasing USGA Championships. I also want to thank David Hill (former Head of FOX Sports) and the USGA for believing in me and instilling their vote of confidence in me from the outset.”

With so much action happening simultaneously across the course, you’d be hard-pressed to find a sport that’s tougher to broadcast than live golf. The 2015 U.S. Open was Fox’s first since winning the rights, and with so few practice runs beforehand, everyone involved recognized certain areas that needed improvement.

It’s harsh to say Norman’s commentary was one of the overarching problems of the broadcast: His rawness came through at times, but he did some good work covering Jason Day’s bout of vertigo during the second round of the tournament. Nevertheless, having an experienced golf broadcaster in the booth like Paul Azinger (who’s being touted as Norman’s successor) alongside Joe Buck would probably go a long way in keeping the broadcast moving in the right direction.
