Zeel wins 6th ITF junior title in three months

Third seed Zeel Desai of India caused a major upset when she defeated another Indian and top seed, Mahak Jain, 6-3, 6-4 in the ITF Junior Grade II Tournament final at the RK Khanna Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday.

AHMEDABAD: Third seed Zeel Desai of India caused a major upset when she defeated another Indian and top seed, Mahak Jain, 6-3, 6-4 in the ITF Junior Grade II Tournament final at the RK Khanna Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. The Ahmedabad girl, Zeel, has already jumped up to 115th in the Junior World Ranking by winning the previous tournament in Chandigarh, and now after this victory in New Delhi her ranking will go up to 75.
This will open up doors for her to get entry into junior grand slam events this year. This is Zeel’s sixth ITF championship in the last three months. The rankings will be updated in two weeks on the ITF website.
Zeel had a tough semifinal win over Eden Richardson of Great Britain winning 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in three sets. In the quarterfinal she got the better of Sing-Le Fan Chiang of Taipei 6-1, 6-3. Before that Zeel defeated Ekaterina Vishnevskaya of Russia 6-1, 6-3 in the first round and Abinikka Renganthan of India 7-5, 6-0 in the second round.
Double crowns for Javia
Top seed Dev Javia won the singles and doubles crown in the first leg of the HSBC Road to Wimbledon under-14 tennis tournament held at the Indore Tennis Club. Javia, defeated third seed Jasvin Singh Sidana of Punjab 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in the singles final. In the semifinal Javia won a hard-fought match against eight-seeded Ritik Rana of Delhi 7-5, 6-4 and in the quarters he got the better of fifth seed Divesh Gahlot of Haryana 7-5, 7-5 in a closely fought encounter.
In the doubles final, the top-seeded pair of Javia and VM Sandeep of Tamil Nadu defeated second-seeded pair of Divesh Gahlot and Aaryan Mehul Zaveri 7-6 (2), 6-1. Javia is supported by Sports Authority of Gujarat under its Shakti Doot Scheme.
