Lt Gen Jacob was a true mentor: Vir Chakra recipient

LUDHIANA: Vir Chakra recipient Colonel HS Kahlon (retd) remembered Lt Gen JFR Jacob, who passed away on Wednesday, as an officer who trained them like his own children. He said that he was not only a leader, but a mentor for all his junior officers who worked under him.
Kahlon, who had won Vir Chakra in the 1971 war, said when he joined Army as second lieutenant in 1966, Jacob was commanding the school of artillery at that time.
He said Jacob was not merely a senior or a commander, but almost a father who helped in their grooming years. "He was a chronic bachelor at that time and he used to treat youngsters as his own children," recollected Kahlon.
He remembered how he had fractured his leg and Jacob got him plastered at a hospital. "Whosoever had worked under him always kept in touch with him."
Recollecting another sweet memory with Jacob, Kahlon said in 1974, he became the Army commander and got posted as G3 in Mountain Brigade on China border which was under his command. When he came to visit the area, he embraced Kahlon and congratulated him.
"I used to wear a gold 'kara' and he asked me the reason for it. When I said it was not a bangle, but 'kara', he asked me how could I think that he did not know about kara which is of iron and not of gold. I told him that I got it in my marriage. He congratulated me," said Kahlon.
He said Jacob is one such officer whom I will never forget and added that all the soldiers of the Indian Army should learn from his life.
