How to: Joining the JDF

The dream of many a little boy in Jamaica is to become a soldier. As they get older, this desire changes for some, but for others, they still want to become a part of Jamaica's security forces. Here is the process to become a commissioned officer in the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF):

1. There is an online application form on the JDF's website (www.jointhejdf.com) which must be completed. Once your application is submitted, you will receive a confirmation that it has been received and is being processed.

2. If the application is successful, you will receive a call and be given further instructions. You will be required to bring in the following documents: birth certificate, ID, Tax Registration Number, National Insurance Scheme and relevant exam certificates.

3. At the preliminary processing, which is done inside Up Park Camp, your documents will be verified and you will also sign an indemnity form.

4. You will then sit a number of potential officer tests. The first is an initial interview with the selection board, followed by a written and aptitude test. You will then undergo a physical test. Upon completion of the physical tests, you will then be asked to conduct an impromptu presentation to determine your public speaking and presentation skills.

5. An initial medical screening will then be done. The JDF has very strict medical requirements, and so persons with the following medical conditions will be immediately excluded: asthma, scoliosis, hernia, major abdominal surgery, hypertension/high blood pressure, colour vision deficiency, Sickle cell, diabetes, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV), hepatitis, tuberculosis, significant dental caries (cavities) or misalignment of teeth, flat feet, bone or joint deformities, history of mental illness and obesity.

6. If you are successful at this level, you will then be invited to travel to the Newcastle Training Depot, where you will spend two days on a JDF Potential Officer Selection Board, which includes a series of physical, mental, and academic tests.
