Plastic and hand surgeon R. Venkataswami of Gandhi Niketan Ashram at T. Kallupatti in Madurai district has been nominated for this year’s Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Award.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday announced awards for persons who had contributed for the development of Tamil language and culture.
Awardees
The others who would be receiving the awards on Saturday at the Madras University Auditorium are V. R. Venkan of Dharmapuri (Thanthai Periyar award), Prof. Parvatha Regina Papa of Karaikudi (Anna award), poet Ponnadiyaan (Mahakavi Bharathiyar award), Prof V. Renukadevi of Madurai (Pavendar Bharathidasan award), A. Ponnusamy (Annal Ambedkar award) and R.K. Rajaram of Madurai (K.A.P. Viswanathan award).
Industrialist V.G. Santhosham will receive the Thiruvalluvar award, while Dinamani Editor K. Vaidhyanathan has been chosen for the Thamizh Thendral Thiru Vi Ka award.
Each award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh, a gold medal and citation. Along with this, 46 senior Tamil scholars would also get financial assistance at the function, said an official release.
