Man in UP divorces wife after she filed an RTI on caste query

LUCKNOW: In an apparently bizarre move, a woman in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh was divorced few months later after she filed an application under the Right to Information (RTI) Act to know her husband’s caste.

The woman has filed an RTI query with the UP StateInformation Commission  (UPSIC), after her husband’s employers refused to reveal details about his caste. seeking to know the caste of her husband.

The woman believed that  her husband is of 15 years  a “low-caste Muslim”. She feared his husband’s background could affect the future of her two children.

Hafiz Usman, the Information commissioner tried to counsel the couple before the case was disposed of in September. He said the husband had accepted the woman despite the differences. He said he divorced him due to some domestic issue.

Usman said. “The husband had a different story to share”. He said the woman was living in her parent’s house and forced her husband to throw his sister out of their house. “He was giving half his salary to his wife while she lived in her parent’s house.” The only condition under which the woman was ready to live with her husband was that he should transfer his property in her name.
