Mentally ill man tied up, beaten to death

Tirunelveli: A 25-year-old mentally ill man hailing from Sankarankovil in Tirunelveli district was beaten to death by a mob. The mentally disturbed youth, who would often get into fights, went on an attacking spree on Sunday. A few persons, including his father, were injured in the attack. Infuriated by the man's violent behaviour, people from the area gathered at around 12 pm and attacked him.
A posse of police who rushed to the spot recovered the body and sent it to the government hospital for post mortem. A murder case has been registered with the Sankarankovil town police against unidentified persons. Further investigation is on. The mentally ill person was identified as Gurusamy, 25, son of Kadarkarai from New First Street at Gandhinagar in Sankarankovil. He became mentally ill a few years ago. He was treated in a few hospitals, but never recovered.
People from his street were up against him as he ruined the peace in the area. On Sunday, Gurusamy attacked Krishnammal, 70, with a log and attacked his father Kadarkarai, a farmer, who tried to placate him. He bit his neighbour's hand when he tried to control him.
Angered by this, the locals who gathered there tied his lands and legs and started thrashing him. When they came to know that he was dead, they left the body and escaped. No one came to help the police when they were taking away the body.
Krishnammal and Kadarkarai were being treated in the Tirunelveli Medical College hospital, whereas the neighbour who sustained a bite injury is being treated at the Sankarankovil Government Hospital.
