Prince of Destiny: Hrithik Roshan

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s our very own homegrown superhero Hrithik Roshan. We like the fact that Hrithik doesn’t need a cape to do extraordinary things. He glides into roles effortlessly; he blasts the box-office with gusto. That he could double up as a Hollywood hunk and can dance circles around the best choreographers make Hrithik a total package. He’s always been a challenger to the Khan hegemony and the best thing is he’s held his own. He’s one of the few actors in Hindi cinema who can claim to have their own movie franchise. On his birthday, we recount the rise and rise of Hrithik Roshan.

Hrithik was the pillar of strength for the Roshan family when Rakesh was reportedly assaulted by the Mumbai underworld just around the release of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai. He’s seen here outside the ICU where his father was admitted

Destined for greatness

As a kid Hrithik featured in his grandfather J Om Prakash and father Rakesh Roshan’s movies like Aasha, Aapke Deewane and Bhagwan Dada. Not one to claim an easy place under the spotlight, Hrithik roughed it out on his father’s productions like Khel, Karan Arjun and Koyla as an assistant. When he finally debuted with Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai in 2000 he blew away the competition. He swept all awards and was viewed as competition for Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan. But soon Hrithik diverted the spotlight away from the sexiness and put it on his acting chops. It was his performances in Fiza and Mission Kashmir that did the trick.

Unfinished business

The supernova was soon working with the biggest production houses and directors. Karan Johar’s multi-starrer Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham hit gold but big budget duds like Aap Mujhe Achche Lagne Lage, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, Mujhse Dosti Karoge!, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon and Yaadein nearly killed his career. But Hrithik bounced back with the blockbuster Koi... Mil Gaya. He followed it up with rave reviews for Lakshya and then Koi Mil Gaya’s sequel Krrish and Dhoom 2 gave Hrithik his top tier position back.

Flying high

2008’s Jodhaa Akbar added more steam to Hrithik’s career. It helped that his popular pairing from Dhoom 2 with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan was reprised. After two years he returned with Kites and Guzaarish but didn’t manage to shake up the box-office. His alleged closeness to his Kites co-star Barbara Mori wasn’t flattering news either. It didn’t help that he sustained a career threatening back injury. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD) and Agneepath helped him storm into the 100-crore club. Krrish 3 has done business in excess of 200 crores. The success has come at a cost. Hrithik has already had a surgery for a clot in his brain. But if history is any indication, there’s one thing Hrithik does better than dancing, it’s bouncing back.
