In the first phase, a 72.2 per cent of the voters exercised their franchise at 471 polling booths for electing 120 gram panchayats, 76 block samiti members and nine Zila Parishad members in Sonepat, Kharkhoda and Murlana blocks in the district.
The highest percentage of 79.1 was recorded in Murlana block and it was 75.6% and 64.1% in Sonepat and Kharkhoda blocks, respectively. There was no report of any untoward incident.
Polling started on a dull note as in the first five hours up to 12 am, around 26 per cent voting had been reported . However, it gained momentum as 32 per cent was recorded at 1 pm, 45 per cent at 2 pm and 64 per cent at 3.30 pm.
Deputy Commissioner Rajiv Ratan and SP Abhishek Garg maintained a strict vigil during polling hours. Flag marches were taken out in a number of hyper-sensitive villages.
