THE  Nigerian Air Force high command has restated commitment to improving the infrastructure of Air Force operational units, barracks, hospitals and schools.

At an inspection of units and establishments under his command in Enugu yesterday, the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, said that the welfare of Air Force men is top on his agenda, adding that NAF would deploy every prudent means to ensure that the welfare of the men remains the priority among other pressing demands.

Addressing the media at the end of his maiden visit and tour of Enugu NAF base, he said, “This unit is one of the units that is participating in the conflict in the North East, with their helicopter support. I am here to look at their challenges and achievements. . But the most important outlook for the Air Force leadership is prudence. We are going to be prudent and we have been prudent since July.

Irrespective of whatever challenges that are on the ground, we have been taught to be very prudent in managing our resources. I believe with that in mind, we are going to solve these problems.”

On the perennial problem of potable water in the state and which is prevalent in the Air Force units, the CAS promised that, “a team will be raised immediately I go back to take a look at this and see how we can solve it. We are also addressing some challenges with infrastructure. Luckily, the Commander-In-Chief, President Muhammadu Buhari has given us what is required to address these infrastructural problems. Very soon we will commence work.”

Continuing, he said, “There are so many priorities, but when it comes to solving problems, the human being is the most important. If the human being is not taken care of, motivated or gingered properly, chances are that he might not perform. Knowing that the officers and men of this unit have problems with water, for example, we want to make sure that they are comfortable. That is what change is all about. It is about ensuring that people are doing well and you cannot expect the men to do well when you have not taken care of their needs.”

Addressing the issue of discrepancy of school fees in NAF schools, Abubakar said the question is not about fees, but about quality

“There is nothing that is good that comes free. Our schools are one of the best and that is why we see everyone coming there. We have plans to provide better accommodation, hospitals, modern teaching aids, well equipped classrooms. But the truth is that most of these students are from outside. We have a responsibility not only to the children of Air Force men, but to everybody, where we have our establishments like hospitals and schools.”
