Homewood-Flossmoor’s Trelan Morrow hoped to ignite a spark big enough to turn around Saturday’s game against Orr.

Morrow, a junior guard, scored five points in the first 90 seconds of the fourth quarter, leading an 8-0 run that brought the Vikings within one.

Orr took over from there, however, pulling away for a 59-45 win at the Bob Hambric Shootout at T.F. North.

“I just tried to get us going,” Morrow said. “I knew what kind of game it was and I tried to get everybody involved and get into the game, but we got a bit tired and Orr took it to another level and closed us out. They’re a great team.”

Ultimately, H-F (9-4) could not overcome the inside-outside duo of Orr’s Raekwon Drake and Brian Hernandez.

Hernandez buried four 3-pointers and led the Spartans (10-2) with 16 points. Drake added 15 points and seven rebounds.

Kendric Pryor (18 points, 6 rebounds),Tyler DeMartra (11 points) and Morrow (9 points) led the Vikings.

“We wanted to make sure we had somebody attached to (Drake) at all times,” H-F coach Marc Condotti said. “I thought we did a good job, but he hurt us with his offensive rebounding. The game was lost on the glass for us.”

Ten of Orr’s 24 first-half points came on second-chance opportunities.

“Those offensive rebounds really hurt us,” Pryor said. “We’d get right back in the game and we’d get a big stop, but then we’d give up a rebound and they’d score.”

Pryor attempted to carry H-F on his back with 11 first-half points, but none of his teammates could get anything going offensively early on. H-F shot just 4-for-17 in the first half and trailed 24-15 at the break.

“You could tell we were a little bit out of sync and our shots weren’t falling,” Pryor said. “I just tried to attack the basket as much as I could.”

All six of H-F’s second-quarter points came on Pryor’s free throws as the Vikings went 0-for-7 from the field.

“In our past two games, Jeffrey Boyd has come out and hit some early shots for us,” Condotti said. “We didn’t have anyone do that (Saturday). We’ve got to be able to play through missing some shots.”

DeMartra scored nine points in the third, including a three-point play that got H-F within 32-26 midway through the quarter. But Drake answered with a tip dunk and a basket inside.

“Those rebounds were big for us,” Drake said. “This was a big win. We wanted to go 3-0 this week and we did it.”

H-F, meanwhile, finished a tough week 2-1 after wins over Bolingbrook and Joliet West.

“This was a big week for us because once the postseason rolls around, we’ll be playing a lot of games in a short time and all the teams we play will be good,” Pryor said. “This week helped us prepare for that. Even though we won two games, though, we should have played better (Saturday).”
