Madhu Bangarappa, Sorab MLA, has said that the Janata Dal (Secular) could have won the election for Legislative Council from Shivamogga local authorities constituency, if it had announced its nominee in advance.

Although the party had lost the election, there were many positive outcomes from it. By securing second highest number of votes, the party had proved that it was a force to reckon with in the district. The election result had motivated the party leaders to work on strengthening its base further in the district, he said at a press conference here on Friday.

The party had delayed the announcement of the name of its candidate. H.N. Niranjan, the party’s nominee for the election, was a green-horn. In spite of these shortcomings, the Mr. Niranjan had secure 1,557 votes, the second highest number, he said.

The election result had indicated that the people of the district were unhappy with the performance of Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government at the Centre and the Congress government in the State. There was a slide in the popularity of both these national parties.

The Janata Dal (S) activists were of the view that the delay in the announcement of candidate left them with very little time to reach out to voters, he said.

The Janata Dal (S) had learnt a lesson from the Legislative Council election. The party would face the forthcoming elections for zilla and taluk panchayats with confidence and better planning. Names of its candidates for these elections would be announced well in advance, he said.

The taluk units of Janata Dal (S) had already held consultations with grass-root level activists regarding the selection of candidates for zilla and taluk panchayat elections. The State leaders of the party would announce the names after consulting the party’s taluk units, he said.Mr. Niranjan, Deputy Mayor of Shivamogga City Corporation H. Palakshi, party’s district unit president M. Srikanth and others were present.
