Japan'€™s airports have been recognized as the world'€™s best on-time performers by UK-based air travel intelligence company OAG.

OAG'€™s Punctuality League annually reveals global rankings of on-time performance (OTP) for airlines and airports worldwide, based on over 50 million flight records.

Japan dominates the airport categories, with Osaka-Itami International Airport rated the Best Small Airport with an average OTP score of 93.85 percent, ahead of South Charleroi Airport in Brussels (93.61 percent) and Panama City'€™s Tocumen International (92.55 percent). Tokyo Haneda Airport (91.25 percent) was named the Best Large Airport ahead of Munich Airport (87.71 percent) and São Paulo Guarulhos International Airport (87.47 percent).

In the Mainline Carriers category, Japan Airlines (90.44 percent) took third place behind Latvia'€™s airBaltic (94.39 percent) and Latin America'€™s Copa (91.69 percent). All Nippon Airways (89.65 percent) also featured in the category'€™s top ten, grabbing fourth place.

'€œThe airports and airlines of Japan have again dominated the performance for the Asia-Pacific region. However, the two main carriers in Australia, Qantas and Virgin Australia, also performed exceptionally well in what is a very competitive market,'€ OAG'€™s Asia-Pacific business development director Mark Clarkson said on Wednesday.

'€œAn airline'€™s schedule is a key element of what the traveler is buying; passengers need to be able to plan around realistic and reliable arrival times and connecting time requirements. Airline planning and operations also rely on these schedules, without which fueling, catering and airport services cannot be planned,'€ added Clarkson.

OAG'€™s network of air travel data includes the schedules of more than 900 airlines and over 4,000 airports. (nov/kes)(+)
