Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Thursday showered praise on Malappuram district for the recent advancements it made in education.
Inaugurating a seminar conducted by the Department of Economics at PSMO College, Tirurangadi, Mr. Chandy said that Malappuram was no longer a backward district in education.
The Chief Minister, however, conceded that the State was yet to make major advancements in higher education sector. “We have made huge leaps in general education. But we still face many hurdles in higher education,” he said.
Mr. Chandy said that the government had plans to introduce new employment oriented programmes and institutions. Even while giving autonomy to colleges meeting the quality requirements, the government was taking care of the weaker sections too, he said. The Chief Minister cited the launching of three aided colleges for SC and ST students as an example.
Presiding over the function, Minister for Education P.K. Abdu Rabb said that efforts were on to set up an academic city in the State. The global education meet to be held at Kovalam on January 30 and 31 will be part of that venture, he said.
P.M.A. Salam, Non-Resident Keralites Welfare Board chairman, released the department’s journal Artha 4 by giving a copy to the Chief Minister.
