A division bench of the Nainital High Court comprising Justice Alok Singh and Justice Sarvesh Kumar today admitted a petition of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Karanpur firing incident of 1994 in which a statehood agitator was killed. The court ordered that Uttarakhand Congress senior vice-president Suryakant Dhasmana, who was also charged in the incident by the CBI, should file a security bond before the CBI trial court at Dehradun.

A violent mob enraged by the Rampur Tiraha incident at Muzzfaranagar district had attacked the house of Suryakant Dhasmana, who was a leader of the then ruling Samajwadi Party. Police personnel given to him by the then Uttar Pradesh government had fired at the violent mob, leading to the death of a youth.

The case was later handed over to the CBI. The CBI trial court had absolved Suryakant but sentenced two policemen to seven years in imprisonment. The CBI moved the Nainital High Court against the trial court order.
