KUCHING: The Sarawak Boxing Association (Saba) will be organising the 2nd Golden Gloves National Boxing Championship at the MBKS Indoor Stadium in Pending from April 25-30.

Saba president Dato Rahman Lariwoo said the event will be organised with the cooperation from the Malaysian Infantry 1st Division, Muara Tuang Camp, the Sarawak State Sports Council and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

It serves as a platform for Sarawak boxers eyeing the Sukma XVIII challenge from July 22-31.

“Apart from that, it also be an early preparation for the officials, coaches and referees who will be involved in the Sukma boxing competition,” Rahman said after chairing a meeting on the championship yesterday.

The upcoming tournament, according to him, will also be used to test the facilities at the MBKS Indoor Stadium which will be the official venue for boxing in Sukma XVIII.

At the 1st Golden Gloves Championship held at Kubah Ria Complex from Sept 14-20 last year, Sarawak captured a gold medal through Stephen Onn in the heavyweight category, a silver through As Sufi Azli and a bronze through Ting Chek Kee.
