Thaarai Thappattai trailer: Bala's latest offering has a very dark and rustic feel to it

National award winning director Bala has something promising in store in the upcoming festive season. The official theatrical trailer of his upcoming project Thaarai Thappattai is just out. It stars actor Sasikumar of Nadodigal fame and actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar, daughter of Kollywood actor Sarathkumar in leading roles. To add to this formidable combination, Isaignani Ilaiyaraaja is the composer of the project.

While the teaser was a bit light and filled with rustic humour, the official trailer is definitely a lot darker and does justice to Bala's style of film making. A lot is happening in the video and gives the viewer a good idea of what to expect from the film. Sasikumar is seen sporting his trademark bushy beard and long, unkempt hair and looks kinda wild. Looks like his role is that of a Nadhaswaram player.

Varalaxmi is seen doing impish activities and dancing with passion. While the first half of the trailer is full of pumped up dancing with people giving wild looks on camera, the latter half takes on much darker tones. We see the protagonist getting involved in fights and life threatening situations. Since its a Bala film, we can expect lots of violence in this one. There also seems to be some political overtones involved in the story.What was really appealing in the entire trailer was Ilaiyaraaja's superb background score. As for the negative aspects, the trailer is seeping with rural culture and a harsh sense of realism which might not sit well with urban audiences.

One thing is certain, whether Thaarai Thappattai achieves commercial success or not, it sure looks like a thought provoking one and another addition to quality cinema.
