The birth centenary celebrations of musical legend M.S. Subbulakshmi began on a grand note at Mahati Auditorium, here on Monday.
The three-day programme, being organised by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) S.V. College of Music and Dance, would be a befitting tribute to the famed classical singer and will be marked by a series of classical cultural programmes performed by eminent artistes from across the country.
Earlier in the day, great granddaughters of M.S. Subbulakshmi — Ms. Soundarya and Ms. Aishwarya —garlanded her statue at Poornakumbham Circle near the Central Bus Station and paid their respects.
Later in the evening, the event began with the performance of ‘Sangeetha Kalanidhi’ A.K.C. Natarajan’s troupe (clarinet – Chennai), followed by Ms. Aishwarya's invocation and other cultural programmes.
‘Sashwatha Asthana Vidhwan’
It may be recalled that the TTD temple management chose M.S. Subbulakshmi as the ‘Sashwatha Asthana Vidhwan’ in 1975.
She rendered Balaji Pancharatnamala including Vishnu Sahasra Namam, Bhaja Govindam and other classical tributes. Even now, a day in the hill town of Tirumala begins with the melodious voice of M.S. Subbulakshmi singing the Venkateswara Suprabhatam.
The event will conclude on Wednesday.
