Kuttanad package: MLA to approach High Court

Thomas Chandy, MLA, has said that he will approach the High Court seeking a CBI probe into the lapses in the execution of works under the Kuttanad package.

He alleged that persons belonging to the Water Resources Minister’s party were behind the irregularities.

Mr. Chandy wanted the Chief Minister to take over the Water Resources portfolio to ensure a fair deal under the Kuttanad package. Former Chief Whip P.C. George had demanded a CBI probe into the matter, he said. Works under the package had begun during the LDF rule, but the progress had been poor since then. The tendering for bund construction in respect of 398 fields had not evoked any response from contractors. He had urged the Chief Minister to convene a meeting of padasekhara samithis to resolve the issue. Later, the works were divided into smaller lots and there was abundant response. The episode indicated foul play. He said works at Thanneermukkam bund, Thottapally spillway, and AC canal were not being taken up in an effective way. The Rs.70-crore drinking water project for 13 panchayats in Kuttanad was also getting indefinitely delayed, he said.
