Three nurses mowed down by unknown vehicle

Three nurses, who were on their way back from new year celebrations early on Friday morning, were killed on the spot after being hit by an unknown vehicle as they were about to cross the National Highway 4 (Bengaluru Highway).

Four others were injured.

The accident, police said, took place around 5.30 a.m.

Early morning tragedy

The women, working at a private medical college hospital in Mevalurkuppam, were walking back to their quarters within Saveetha University premises, after prayers and a celebration held at a place of worship in Thandalam village.

T. Kalaiarasi (23) of Agaram, S. Saraswathi (23) of Vellachipattu and V. Kuppu (24) of Melvishar, all of them from villages situated in Vellore district, died on the spot. Kavitha (23) of Tuticorin, K. Kalaiarasi (22) of Pernampet in Vellore district, E. Mala (21) of Pallipattu in Tiruvallur district and M. Saraswathi (23) of Gudiyatham in Vellore district were injured and were admitted to the private hospital.

The Sriperumpudur police have registered a case under Section 304 (A) of Indian Penal Code – causing death due to rash and negligent driving.

Police said they arew trying to obtain footages through closed television circuit surveillance cameras installed on NH4 toll plazas and other traffic intersections. Crime teams are working to trace the vehicle involved.
