The annual procession carrying the Thiruvabharanam (sacred jewellery) for the Makaravilakku festival will set off from the Valiyakoickal Sastha temple at Pandalam to Sabarimala on January 13 afternoon.

The sacred ornaments of the presiding deity will be carried by Guruswamis on their head all the way to Sabarimala. It will reach the Sannidhanam on the Makaravilakku day afternoon on January 15.

The presiding deity will be adorned with the sacred jewellery prior to the Deeparadhana.

The sighting of the star (Makarajyoti) on the eastern horizon of the Sannidhanam followed by the ‘Deeparadhana’ atop Ponnambalamedu, a distant hill facing Sabrimala, in the next few minutes after the ritualistic Deeparadhana at the Ayyappa temple, will be the highlights of the Makaravilakku festival.

Tens of thousands of devotees from different parts of the country are expected to congregate at Sabarimala as well as various vantage points in the sacred grove to worship the Makaravilakku and Makarajyoti.
