Trevor’s perseverance helps Oh Mis Akilah

By: Tippu Sultan   December 28 , 2015

Jockey Trevor Patel`s perseverance on O Ms Akilah saw the Srinivas Reddy trained three-year-old filly pull off a last stride win over Numinous in the 1400 metres Lingapur Cup (Div I), a Category I race, the feature event of Monday`s races held at Malakpet. The lower division of the race was claimed by Brahmani where Trevor had a dramatic fall but luckily escaped with any injury and came back to fulfil his commitments of the day.

When Numinous shot ahead inside the final furlong, it looked like the four-year-old had established a winning lead as Os Ms Akilah had some leeway to recover and the filly wasn`t responding aggressively. However, the filly picked up steam towards the closing stages of the race and managed to snatch the issue in a thriller. Vijay Viraaj and Morning Miracle were not far behind. The lower division of the race was for the asking for the well backed Brahmani who built on her good forward run. After the field had crossed the first furlong, Veloz who was travelling wide missed a stride and went down, resulting in jockey Trevor sliding over the head of the filly and rolling over on the turf. Luckily, Trevor landed safe and came back to ride much to the relief of race goers who were distressed by the fall of the jockey. Brahmani who raced in the rear bunch till approaching the final bend, got all the spaces in the run in for home and quickly covered the leeway and was hailed a winner by the time the final furlong approached. Brahmani stormed away to win from Laurel Canyon and Movie Moghual while the long-time leader Kohinoor Thunder weakened to finish fourth.

Sketch of Beauty who has been the most consistent horse on the circuit, having missed the board on only one occasion, looked very superior in the field contesting for the 1200 metres Hardwar Plate (Div I), a category II race. Imran Chisty brought Sketch of Beauty with a smooth run to take over the running from Sprint Legend approaching the final 200 metres. Sketch of Beauty skipped away in a trice to win as she pleased. Italian Cypress ran on late to finish a good second. Anupam Sharma`s other word Aakash Vani won the lower division of the race providing the trainer and jockey Chisty with a double in this event. Aakash Vani is known to be a tough customer to handle if she gets an uncontested lead. Aakash Vani hit the front from the word `go` and thereafter the race ceased to be a contest as the filly maintained a healthy lead and expanded it to unpassable one in the final furlong. Commanding Boy finished powerfully to reduce the margin of victory but then the front runner was always in command of the race. Favourite Moon Walker was a well beaten third.

Srinagesh trained Beauty Flash recorded a shock win in the 1600 metres Falaknuma Cup, a Category III race. Completely ignored in the betting ring as Dahlois attracted all the support, Beauty Flash chased the favourite well into the straight before storming ahead and win with a measure of comfort. The favourite disappeared out of sight. Accelerator and Bellatrix occupied the next two slots on the frame. The winner paid fancy dividend on the tote.

Long shot Vijay`s Empress recorded a thrilling win over Charlie Brown and Elysian in the 1200 metres Romantic Fantasy Plate, a Category II race for two year olds. Vijays Wonder was the favourite and she led from the start before weakening in the closing stages of the race. Vijays Empress who was in a handy position, then took charge and barely managed to stave off the determined bid of Charlie Brown by the proverbial whisker. The latter has been consistent in the five runs that he has already run in a relative short period of less than two months. Elysian and Vijays Wonder were half a length adrift of each other behind Charlie Brown in third and fourth positions.

After displacing front running Hunter`s Pride from the lead position in the straight, Awesome Show bounced clear and had no problem in holding off the challenge of favourite Poll Promise in the 1200 metres Wishful Thinking Plate, a Category III race. Sol Invictus was a well beaten third.

Long shot Great Warrior was driven out to win by apprentice jockey Deepak Singh in the 1200 metres Olympic Flame Plate, a Category III race. Trustful shot ahead inside the final 150 metres and shaped like a winner but Great Warrior on the inside, true to his name, fought like a warrior and wrested the race. Squanderers Square was third while favourite Symbol of Honour made no show.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Victorindiafoxtrot just about managed to beat the challenge of late rallying Limitation to justify the favouritism in the 2200 metres Galactica Plate, a Category II race. Victorindiafoxtrot took over the running from Meheran inside the final furlong even as Limitation was baulked of a clear run and had to drop back and brought wide to get a clear run. Though Limitation finished strongly, the lead established Victorindiafoxtrot held him in good stead as he clung on to win by a neck.
