The investigation into the alleged police firing in Shahbad Dairy last week, which led to the death of a man, has been handed over to the Delhi Police Crime Branch, said sources.
The incident occurred on December 24. Police “fired in the air” to control a mob that was protesting the death of a three-year-old boy.
While protesters had claimed police opened fire at them, police said they fired in self-defence.
DCP (outer) Vikramjeet Singh has confirmed the development. Sources said a special investigation team (SIT) of the Crime Branch will now probe the incident.
Violence had erupted after the child, Aditya, was run over by a school bus while he was on his way to buy shampoo from his grandmother’s shop.
Irate residents took the bus to a nearby park and threatened to set it on fire. This led to clashes between residents and police, said sources. “Police lathicharged the people, who pelted stones,” added the sources. Several police personnel were injured, said sources.
