A thief managed to steal wedding jewels worth Rs 16.85 lakh from a hotel in Lonavala where the bride’s family had landed to prepare for the marriage scheduled for the next day. The jewels which were allegedly stolen include diamond studded gold neckless, earrings, gold chain, ring and bangles. Rs 65 lakh in cash is also reported to have gone missing.
The incident, which happened at Bijis Hill Retreat Resort in Lonavala, came to light Saturday morning.
The complaint in this regard was registered by Sunita Jain (48), resident of Paradise Apartment, Andheri, Mumbai. She had kept the jewels and cash inside a bag.
“The thief entered the room where the bag was kept post-midnight and decamped with the bounty. The matter came to light the next morning when the complainant and others looked for the bag. We suspect the thief to be someone who was closely observing the happenings or knew either the hotel staff or the family members closely,” said I S Patil, Police Inspector, Lonavala Police Station.
