Facebook had recently offered basic Internet access across the country with its telecom partner Reliance Communications, under the name of 'Free Basics', which was earlier called 'Internet.org'. It claims to provide free access to about 80 apps and websites in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Goa. India has over eight lakh users under the Free Basics initiative.

Free Basics, which aims to bring free Internet access to the developing world, has faced backlash, with activists alleging that it is against net neutrality, the idea that all online traffic should be treated equally. Comedy group AIB had also in the past released a video explaining why it isn't a good idea. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has however time and again defended the programme, stating that Free Basics and Facebook are 100 per cent supportive of net neutrality.
