AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat high court on Friday directed that a meeting be held in Gandhinagar on Saturday to elect the president and vice-president of Dahod district panchayat. The court gave this order on a petition filed by 25 out of the 26 elected members of the panchayat who belong to the Congress. These members had said they apprehended ruckus by BJP members.

During a hearing held at the residence of Justice A G Uraizee on Friday , the state government said all the members of the Congress will be provided foolproof police protection during their journey from Dahod to Gandhinagar, and back. As one member is hospitali zed, the high court directed that he be provided an ambulance to attend the meeting.
Congress won 26 seats while the BJP won 24 seats in the elections held on November 29 for 50 seats of the Dahod district panchayat. The petition filed by 25 members from the Congress stated that BJP members had first indulged in a verbal spat when they gathered in a hall at Dahod to elect the president and vice-president on December 22. Later, a mob of BJP supporters had allegedly created ruckus outside the meeting venue and some of them had torched a bus in which Congress members had come to the hall, the petitioners said.
