As part of efforts to improve medical standards, the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) Super-speciality Hospital in Tirupati recently set up a ‘Triage’ centre at its emergency ward.
The primary objective of the concept is to improve emergency care and prioritise cases in terms of clinical urgency, besides obviating overcrowding.
Of late, the hospital, which caters to the medical needs of people of the entire Rayalseema region, has been experiencing a surge in emergency cases. The authorities introduced the system, as the resources had been proving nominal in contrast to the growing requirements.
According to SVIMS In-charge Director Dr. Sivakumar, it is a process of immediate sorting of patients in accordance with the gravity of the ailment, determining the right treatment in addition to the survival quotient. Initially, the postgraduate staff evaluate the condition of the patient brought to the emergency ward, while admission to the ward is purely based on clinical findings.
The contused are broadly divided into three categories – those who require immediate surgery or life-saving intervention, those subjected to observations and thirdly a no-emergency case wherein a symptomatic treatment can be planned and attended as well, Dr. Sivakumar said.
