The Sikh youth who staged a dharna with Balwinder Singh’s body in front of One Town Police Station here on Tuesday night demanding action against the police officials involved in the firing, called off their protest after Mayor S. Ravinder Singh gave them an assurance late in the evening. The Mayor consulted Minister for Finance Etala Rajender and then assured them that a sum of Rs.5 lakh would be paid as ex gratia and that medical expenses for treatment of the injured parents of the victims would be taken care of, by the Government, apart from sanction of a 2-BHK flat.

Earlier, tension built up in the town after local Sikh youth gathered before the police station after the post-mortem. Traffic came to a grinding halt following the dharna.
