UAP/Old Mutual Group is introducing a direct distribution channel to grow its general and life insurance businesses.

Group chief executive Peter Mwangi said the company will roll out the insurance sales channel in 2016. The method does not need financial planners or sales agents.

“In the coming months the UAP/Old Mutual Group will be the first in the market to launch direct insurance, an alternative distribution channel that entails distributing insurance products and services through contact centres or online via a website.

“Direct insurance will involve an inbound call centre, which will respond to enquiries from prospective insurance clients and an outbound call centre, which will follow up on potential customers via a short telephone call or telemarketing,” Mr Mwangi told the Business Daily.

He said the company is using this method in response to the changing customer-buying behaviour that is going towards online and mobile-based solutions due to their convenience and flexibility.

“Customers are able to quickly adopt smart mobile devices, offering them an opportunity to engage and use the Internet to inform, compare, buy and interact with service providers as has been witnessed in other markets.”

He cited Progressive Corporation in the US, Admiral in the UK and Miway, Outsurance and Dialdirect in in South Africa.
