After a year filled with complaints, Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation is going to change the way it plows major highways in Muskoka and Parry Sound.

Bracebridge Mayor Graydon Smith says the use of tow plows on Highway 11 and Highway 400 have made for a rough couple of years on both roads.

“(They) just didn't work. The public has been crying for years to get these things off the road because they leave a trail of snow behind on the highway,” Smiths says.

The MTO says there isn't enough traffic on these highways to properly pack down the salt the plows spread.  For that reason, the controversial plows will no longer service either of the highways.

The ministry plans to add more plows to the fleet and will make highway ramps a higher priority.

The tow plows will still be used on what's called passing highways, like Highway 60 and Highway 118. The MTO will also bring the plows further south, where they may be more effective.
