Assam govt reiterates Satra's opposition to Rahul's visit

Guwahati, Dec 21 (UNI) Assam government today reiterated that the Barpeta Satra Parichalan (management) Samiti had opposed Congress vice-president and MP Rahul Gandhi's visit to the Vaishnavite monastery in western Assam earlier this month.
The ruling Congress had alleged that RSS had infiltrated and instigated people in Barpeta Satra to oppose Rahul's visit, which had forced the Congress leader to pay obeisance at the Satra at the end of a padyatra in Barpeta rather than at the start on December 12 last.
The allegation by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and backed by Mr Gandhi had sparked a controversy, with the head priest of the monastery, Burha Satriya, denying any opposition to Gandhi's visit.
