Sabah PKR enjoys 'some autonomy'
Kota Kinabalu: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah Secretary Datuk Maijol Mahap said the party's national leadership has given some autonomy to PKR Sabah to run the party here.He said the autonomy is reflected in the party constitution in which Article 5.8 stated that the party is committed to fight for equal partnership between Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula as contained in the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

"I am issuing this statement to clarify an article carried by a news portal which implied the PKR Sabah is going against its national leadership on autonomy matters.

"Even though Keadilan is a national party, the party leadership is giving some autonomy to PKR Sabah to run the party in the state.

"This is because PKR Sabah understands the aspiration of the people of Sabah in that even though we are part of the federation of Malaysia. We must have political and economic autonomy and this is exactly what we want to implement if the people gave us the mandate to rule the state and nation in the coming general election," he said in a statement, Sunday.

In line with this aspiration, Maijol said PKR Sabah Chairman, Datuk Seri Lajim Ukin has proposed to the party leadership via his winding up speech at the recent National Congress held in Shah Alam, Selangor that it shall have its own annual Congress.

He said the party is a living thing and as such it has to evolve to suit the Sabah's needs and aspiration in accordance with its historical background.

"What this means is that PKR Sabah needs to have a certain degree of autonomy to run the party here. This is still at the proposal stage and of course this will be discussed by the top party leadership at an appropriate time.

"In doing this, are we against the stance of party central as suggested by a portal writer recently?

"We are not, because to start with everything, it must be discussed and agreed by the party leadership and an amendment of the party constitution needs to be tabled and approved by the party national congress," he said.

So in actuality, Maijol said there should be no question at all of locking horns with or going against the central leadership, as portrayed by the article, as PKR Sabah is very much part and parcel of the leadership itself, which of course operates on general consensus.
