Woman refuses to marry drunk groom, walks out

KANPUR: A woman threw away her varmala' (garland) in disgust and walked away from the stage at her wedding in Ghatampur area on Kanpur-Hamirpur Road on Monday night after finding the bridegroom to be drunk. Her parents and siblings supported her decision and asked the 'baraat' to return.
Sources said the man was hopeless y inebriated and even fell off the stage seconds before the garland-exchange ceremony .“She refused to marry the drunken groom,“ the woman's father said over the phone. “We did not force her to marry against her wishes.
Ghatampur station house officer SHO) A K Singh said the groom started quarrelling with the hosts. “The bride, who witnessed to the entire drama, called off the wedding,“ he said. The groom's side later approached the po ice but the matter was resolved amicably with both the sides reaching a compromise, said the SHO.
The woman is from Sidhauli village and the man from Sujaur village, Kanpur Dehat district.
