Nine persons were arrested in a joint operation by the City Shadow Police and the Medical College police in connection with the hacking of a man late on Sunday. The attack is being seen as the fallout of rivalry between two gangs in the city.
According to Sheen Tharayil, Circle Inspector, Medical College, Sunil, 27, a CITU worker and the brother of notorious gangster Dini Babu, was attacked and hacked by a gang at Kannammoola around 8 p.m. on Sunday. The men who were part of the attack on Sunil, who is currently in the intensive care unit at the Government Medical College Hospital here, were identified as Arun alias Jabri Arun, 26, Sijith, 32, Vineeth, 26, Anish alias ‘Mali’ Arun, 26, Binu alias ‘Kari’ Binu, 39, Saju alias ‘Kallan’ Saju, 38, Suresh alias ‘Kopra’ Suresh, 38, and Saji, 38, and Praveen, 28.
Except Praveen, who is a resident of Pullukkadu near Thumba, the rest are from Kannammoola.
Of these, four – Jabri Arun, Mali Arun, Rajan and Vineeth – are accused of attacking Sunil, while four others are accused of conspiracy and Praveen of harbouring the accused at his residence. All the nine are allegedly accomplices of gangster Puthenpalam Rajesh.
Both Sunil and Dini Babu were earlier accomplices of Rajesh but later fell out with Babu forming his own gang. Both Rajesh and Babu, Mr. Tharayil said, were currently in jail after being detained under the Kerala Antisocial Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA).
The accused, he said, had fled the spot immediately after the attack and were hiding at Pullukkadu. They were traced with the help of mobile signals with a Shadow Police team keeping an eye on them before they were intercepted on Monday from near Infosys on the NH bypass while they were allegedly attempting to move to another hideout.
