New Delhi: Barpeta Satra was founded by vaishnavite saint Sri Sri Madhabdev about 500 years ago. Saint Madhabdev stayed here for 8 years, where he had written a lot of his best literatures. After he became a disciple of Sri Srimanta Sankardev, he left the Satra and gave its responsibility to his disciple Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata (1490-1596 AD).

1. Barpeta Satra is a well-known hindu temple situated in the Barpeta town of Assam's Barpeta district.

2. It was established by the vaishnavite saint Madhabdev in 1583 AD.

3. The temple's earlier name was Barpeta than.

4. Originally built as a Kutcha house, it was made into a concrete structure with big-pillars and decorative wall paintings in 1878.

5. When Madhabdeva left the Satra, he gave its responsibility to his disciple Sri Mathura Das Burha Ata (1490-1596 AD).

6. Burha Ata became the 1st Satria of Barpeta than. It was Burha Ata who systematized the administration of the Satra leading to the development of the institution and the region of Barpeta.

7. The Satra has three entry gates (i) Uttar Dwaar (north gate), (ii) Dakshin Dwaar (south gate) and (iii) Dalan (west gate). There is no entry from East. Dalan is considered the main entry.

8. The main prayer hall or Kirtan ghar, is situated in the center of the Sarta complex. There is no statue of any God or Goddess inside the Kirtan ghar.

9. Bhaj Ghar is known as Monikut. Valuable ornaments of gold and silver are kept in this area. Some representative statues are also kept here.

10. The house of Sri Ram Ata was established opposite to the house of Madhabdev’s house. A well is constructed here and the water of this well is considered pure and used in all the works of the Satra.
