GUWAHATI: Most-wanted Adivasi militant Lakhi Hembrom, chairman of the National Santhal Liberation Army (NSLA), was arrested from Taljhari village in Godda district in Jharkhand on Saturday night.
An Assam Police police team is already reported to have reached there and taken his custody from their counterparts in Jharkhand.
Lakhi was wanted in at least four cases of militancy and extortion-related cases in Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon districts.
He was arrested by the ant-terrorist squad of Jharkhand from Taljhari village, where the militant had been taking shelter for quite some time now.
The militant leader was staying in the village taking advantage of his Adivasi origins.
Initial investigations have revealed that he was in Jharkhand to try and grow a nexus with Maoist elements, said a senior police official.
Sources claimed that with the help of the Maoists, he was trying to bring in a batch of Adivasi youths from Assam to impart armed training.
The official added that Lakhi was arrested on a tip off provided by Assam Police sources.
