Competitions for students on January 31

The Karaikudi Kamban Kazhagam’s State-level annual oratorical competition for college students and Kamba Ramayana songs recitation competition for school students would take place at Krishna Kalyana Mandapam here on January 31.

Kamban Kazhagam secretary Pala Palaniappan, in a press release, said that the oratorical competition would be open for all students of Arts and Science, Engineering and other professional colleges in the State.

He said the competition was organised to motivate the younger generation to development their literary skills and instincts for Tamil literature. A college could send two students to take part in the competition.

Three topics would be announced half-an-hour before the competition and the participants could choose one, he said.

The winner would be given a cash award of Rs. 3,000 and would be given the honour of addressing the Kamban festival, he said. The second winner would be given a cash award of Rs. 1,000. The judges would also award a special prize to a best performer, he added.

The Kamba Ramayana song recitation competitions would be held for school students of classes VI, VII and VIII and for students of 9, 10, 11 and 12 in two categories, he said. Students in the first category should recite 20 songs from ‘Guga padalam’ in Ayodhya Kandam and students in the second category should recite 20 songs from ‘Veedanin Adaikala padalam’ in Utha gandam, he said.

The winners would be given a cash award of Rs. 1,000 each and five best performers from the two categories would be given Rs. 250 each, he said.
