AITUC condemns Centre

December 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 24, 2016 03:31 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

All India Trade Union Congress’ construction wing has condemned the Central Government for not declaring as national calamity the floods that have affected the State.

Addressing journalists ahead of the State Executive Committee meeting of the construction wing, State president N. Periasamy and General Secretary K. Ravi said that the floods had severely impacted the lives of construction workers, who were left without jobs. Right at the start of the rainy season, construction activity came to a halt. The floods that followed had robbed them of livelihoods as construction equipment was washed away. Like those whose buildings were under construction and affected, the workers too had been hit hard, they said and urged the Centre to not take any more time in declaring it a national calamity.

They wanted the State Government to make good the shortfall of bricks, sand and cement and provide compensation to the affected workers as there was provision to do so under the construction workers’ welfare board.
