NEW DELHI: Union HRD Minister
Smriti Irani on Saturday attacked Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi over his remark that the
National Herald case is a “hundred per cent vendetta coming out of PMO”, calling it an insult to judiciary.
“There cannot be a bigger insult to country's democracy and judiciary. If he thinks country's judiciary functions at someone's instructions, then there can't be a bigger insult of country's court,” Irani said at a media event.
Irani who had unsuccessfully challenged Rahul in his
Amethi constituency in 2014 polls further said: “The kind of comments Rahulji is making, the only message nation is getting is that if country's law and judiciary don't kneel before Gandhi family the Parliament will not be allowed to work.”
She added the foundation of the country's democracy was in allowing one to express him/herself.
BJP also hit back at Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi for blaming the court summons issued to him and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on PMO’s “vendetta politics”.
“He is blaming PMO to cover up his own sins. He should either back up his accusations with evidence or seek pardon for from people for telling lies and indulging in corruption,” BJP spokesperson Shrikant Sharma said.
Alleging that Sonia Gandhi and Rahul had usurped property worth several crores, he said instead of fighting the matter in the court which has initiated proceedings against them, the Congress leaders have resorted to disruptions in Parliament to hinder the development measures being taken by the Modi government.
The BJP functionary said this is not the first instance of Congress disrupting Parliament. “Unable to get to grips with its defeat in LS elections, Congress resorted to disruptions in the very first session of LS polls. They blocked Parliament on such flimsy pretexts as journalist Ved Pratap Vaidik’s interactions during his visit to Pakistan,” said Sharma.
“Congress is not letting government implement such important measures like the enactment of GST bill and passage of legislations meant to hike bonus for low-wage employees,” he further said, adding that Congress’s protests were tantamount to interference with the functioning of judiciary.
